New free website e-mails you when you’re going over budget – Orlando Sentinel

You get an e-mail warning you that you are nearing your budget limit. No, it’s not from your mom, but from a new website.

Plantation-based PowerWallet.com helps people manage their finances, sending reminders to pay bills — from credit cards to monthly cable charges — and alerting consumers when they’re near their budget limits.

“It keeps your spending in control,” said PowerWallet co-creator and president, Bob Sullivan. “We looked at the market about a year ago and found people were having trouble with their finances.”

So Sullivan helped set up the secure website that allows people to safely list their finances online, including their investments, bank accounts and bills. “It’s got the same line of security of online banking — if not more,” he said.

The website evaluates people’s expenses and helps them create budgets, said co-creator Howard Dvorkin, founder of Fort Lauderdale’s nonprofit Consolidated Credit Counseling Services. “People can see how much they can save by cutting back on a certain category, and find out how close they are to reaching goals,” Dvorkin said.
